Frequently Asked Questions
If you don’t see the answer you are looking for, feel free to reach out. We’re always happy to help guests plan their time on the river.
What should we wear on the river?
Wear comfortable clothing that can get wet. Lightweight, breathable fabrics work best. We recommend secure footwear like water shoes or sandals with straps, along with sun protection such as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
You may also want to bring a small towel and a change of clothes for after your time on the water.
Are life jackets included for rentals and tours?
Yes. All guests are provided with a USCG-approved life jacket (PFD), which must be worn while on the water.
Do I need experience and is this suitable for beginners?
No prior kayaking experience is required. We provide a brief safety orientation and basic instruction before launching.
Our tours and rentals are designed to be approachable for beginners while still enjoyable for those with more experience.
What happens if the weather changes?
Your safety is our top priority. If weather or river conditions become unsafe, we may delay, reschedule, or cancel your reservation.
In those cases, you’ll have the option to reschedule or receive a credit toward a future visit.
How early should we arrive before our reservation?
Please plan to arrive at least 15–20 minutes before your scheduled time. This allows time for check-in, waivers (if not already completed), and a brief orientation.
Can we bring snacks or a small cooler?
Yes, you’re welcome to bring snacks and small coolers. We recommend keeping items secure and lightweight.
Do you allow pets? (if applicable)
For safety reasons, pets are not permitted.
Kayaks have limited weight capacity and balance considerations, and the presence of wildlife—including alligators—makes bringing pets onto the river unsafe.
What are the physical requirements for kayaking?
Participants should feel comfortable sitting in a kayak and paddling for the duration of their experience.
Kayaking involves light to moderate physical activity, including paddling, entering and exiting the kayak, and maintaining balance on the water.
Are children allowed on kayak rentals or tours?
Yes. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
We recommend our experiences for children approximately 8 years and older, depending on comfort level and ability to follow instructions.
What is your cancellation or reschedule policy?
Reservations may be canceled or rescheduled up to 24 hours before the scheduled start time for a full credit toward a future visit.
Cancellations made within 24 hours are non-refundable.
In the event of unsafe weather conditions, you will be offered the option to reschedule or receive a credit.
Where do we check in when we arrive?
Check-in takes place at our main location at:
Sumtrus River Adventures and General Store
8271 County Road 48
Bushnell, FL 33513
Our team will assist you with check-in, gear, and orientation before heading to the water.
Do guests have to know how to swim?
No, but guests should be comfortable around water. Life jackets are provided and required at all times while on the water.
What are the river conditions like?
The Withlacoochee River is typically calm and slow-moving, making it well-suited for beginners and relaxed paddling.
Conditions can vary slightly depending on weather and water levels, but overall the river offers a peaceful, scenic environment with opportunities to observe wildlife and natural Florida landscapes.
Do guests need a fishing license?
A valid Florida fishing license is required for anyone planning to fish. Licenses can be obtained online through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC).
